Firefighter have extinguished a fire inside a garbage truck in Bonner this afternoon.

At about 2.20pm, ACT Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a truck fire on Mulligans Flat Road.

Upon arrival firefighters located the truck with smoke issuing.

The rear of the truck was opened and a foam water mix was sprayed onto the waste in an attempt to contain the fire.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the compressed materials the fire was not able to be controlled safely and the waste was removed from the vehicle for adequate extinguishment.

Roads in the area were closed for about an hour while the area was made safe.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
