One dead, residents trapped and infrastructure damaged following severe weather event

One person has lost their life and a large amount of infrastructure has been damaged trapping residents following heavy rain over the weekend.

A man who was kayaking on the flooded Murrumbidgee River went missing yesterday sparking a large scale emergency response in the ACT.

Police said members from the AFP, ACT Fire and Rescue and ACT SES responded to the area just after 2pm.

Sadly despite the efforts of emergency services the man was found deceased at about 6.20pm.

SES crews rescued another male who had being washed away by floodwaters near Briadwood near Cooma road, with the quick work by crews the man was saved and transported to hospital.

The Neringla Road crossing over the Araluen Creek collapsed on Sunday leaving residents in areas south of the crossing trapped as a result.

Although flood waters have receded in most places a large number of roads have been damaged and authorities recommend checking your route before you travel.
