Firefighters have contained and extinguished a grass fire on Mt Ainslie this afternoon.

At about 2.45pm ACT Fire and Rescue received reports of smoke on the Western side of Mt Ainslie.

Firefighters arrived to find a grass fire burning in steep terrain 30x30m in size.

Access to the fire was difficult with several long lines of hose required to be run to reach the head of the fire.
The fire burnt through an area of about 100mx200m in size before eventually being contained at 5pm this afternoon

During the height of the fire 17 fire appliances and about 35 firefighters responded to the scene supported by 2 aircraft.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and is not known at this time.
