The driver of a sedan has escaped serious injury following a collision with a cow near Michelago this evening.

At about 6pm ACT and NSW Emergency Services responded to reports of a persons trapped crash about 1km North of the Michelago township on the Monaro Highway.

First arriving emergency service personnel were able to assist the driver from the vehicle which has sustained significant roof and front end damage.

The driver was assessed on scene by Paramedics with the assistance of the South Care road retrieval team and transported to hospital in a stable condition.

A vet was called to the scene but it's not clear whether the cow died on impact or was later euthanized.

The Monaro Highway was closed in both directions for just over an hour until the scene was cleared.
