Several persons and their pets rescued following unit fire in O'Connor

Several people and their pets have been rescued following a unit fire in O'Connor overnight.

At about 8.30pm, ACT Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a structure fire on David Street.

Upon arrival they located a rear unit well alight with several animals trapped in the burning unit.

Firefighters worked quickly to try and contain the fire to the unit of origin with fire quickly spreading into the roof space.

Some residents were asked to shelter in place until firefighters were able to create a safe passage for them to leave.

An ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesperson said that several residents were assessed by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics for minor injuries, but they did not require transport to hospital.

The fire was eventually brought under control at about 10pm, with at least 4 units sustaining significant to severe damage.

ACT Policing are now on scene and have commenced an investigation into the fire.
