A passenger has been left with serious injuries following a crash on the Cotter Road earlier this morning.

At approximately 6.20am ACT Emergency Services responded to reports of a crash with persons trapped on the Cotter Road just uphill from Casuarina Sands.

Firefighters worked quickly and carefully to extricate one female patient from the vehicle she was in, she was treated and transported to hospital by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics in a serious condition.

The driver of the vehicle escaped with only minor injuries.

The road was closed while ACT Policing's Major Collision Team examined the scene.

ACT Policing said investigations are ongoing into the crash.
