Firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out inside the Belconnen Westfield overnight.

Just before midnight ACT Fire and Rescue responded to an automatic fire alarm on Emu Bank, Belconnen.

Upon arrival firefighters located fire and heavy smoke logging on level 2 and 3 of the centre, the fire had been mostly contained by the buildings sprinkler system.

The fire is believed to have started in a piece of cleaning equipment on charge and is not suspicious.

Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours dealing with a significant amount of water from the sprinkler system.

Westfield has resumed normal operations this morning.
